Generative AI edition of March Madness
Top 10 Generative AI Highlights and Insights 3.26.2023
I want to pick the top 10 generative AI stories every week, but it is super hard. Any of the top 10 weekly stories in "March Madness" month would have made the top 10 stories of the year in the past decade. That's how fascinating the AI world we live in today is.
1) OpenAI unveils plugin support.
This is the biggest news of the week, for sure. Although most of the industry pundits say OpenAI just has its ‘App Store’ moment and we can all write applications for OpenAI from now on.
I beg to differ for two reasons: a) OpenAI does not and will not have the DNA to build a comprehensive platform to entertain millions of developers. 2) Based on the demo I looked at it, there won't be millions of apps on top of ChatGPT.
The reality is that there will be only one application called ChatGPT (or its future versions, such as GPT-4). It is a superapp!
2) Google's Bard waitlist is now open to the public.
Many people, including myself, got it very quickly. There is effectively no #Bard #API support yet, as right now there is a wait to even be added to the waiting list.
3) Nvidia released three new computing platforms for AI inferencing (the run-time prediction process): DGX H100, NVIDIA L4, and H100 NVL.
According to NVIDIA, DGX H100 delivers 9x performance, 2x faster networking, and high-speed scalability. Nvidia also announced #NeMo and #Picasso, generative models and services for text, images, video, and 3D.
4) Microsoft announced the #Bing Image Creator.
Microsoft added the image generation capability to the New Bing so that you can create images with your words.
5) Microsoft announced CoPilot X.
“With Copilot X we’re laying out our future vision of CoPilot, which means AI is at every step of the developer lifecycle,” explains GitHub CEO Thomas Dohmke in an interview with The Verge. " Imagine I can talk to ChatGPT and ask it to explain what a piece of code is doing. Pretty nice!
6) Sequoia published a blog post: "Developer Tools 2.0"
Just when some think CoPilot X from Microsoft GitHub is going to cover all the developer's needs, Sequoia Capital begs to differ. In fact, they see a super big white space with developer tools in the AI Age.
I can relate to Sequoia's comments. For instance, I am on the board of a developer tool company called Metabob. The founder and CEO, Massimiliano Genta, told me last week that because there is a lot more AI-generated code, there are more bugs too. Metabob sees an increase in demand because the company is doing code reviews for both pilots (humans) and copilots (bots).
7) Databricks debuted and open-sourced ChatGPT-like LLM: Dolly.
Who would have thought Databricks was taking on OpenAI or cloning an OpenAI model?! I am not yet convinced that LLM will be Databricks' focus yet, but it is indeed the company's longtime mission to democratize AI for the enterprise. The open-source large language model (LLM) is called Dolly, named after Dolly the sheep, the first cloned mammal.
8) Adobe announced #Firefly.
It is a family of generative models for text-to-image, text-to-brush/pattern/template/vector, inpainting & outpainting, and more.
9) Can you believe it: this week alone, more than 200 new AI tools were released?
10) Last but not least, Microsoft Researchers published a very interesting 154-page paper, "Sparks of Artificial General Intelligence: Early experiments with GPT-4."
"In all of these tasks, GPT-4’s performance is strikingly close to human-level performance, and often vastly surpasses prior models such as ChatGPT. Given the breadth and depth of GPT-4’s capabilities, we believe that it could reasonably be viewed as an early (yet still incomplete) version of an artificial general intelligence (AGI) system."
In one of the examples, the researchers prompted the model to draw a person by combining the shapes of the letters Y, O, and H. See Figure 2.5 for the exact prompt and the result. Sparks of AGI were demonstrated!
